FERGUSON, Lawrence. (Chemistry 1979-1980) Lawrence Andrew Ferguson, a retired
educator and former naval reservist, died of cancer Saturday at his Myerstown, Pa., home. He was 63. Mr. Ferguson was
born in Cooperstown, N.Y., and raised in Drexel Hill, Pa. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the
University of Virginia in 1965 and a master's in teaching from Duke University in 1966. Commissioned an ensign in 1965,
Mr. Ferguson attended the Naval Justice School in Newport, R.I., and served as a legal officer aboard the aircraft
carrier USS Essex. In the late 1960s, he taught math and science at the Naval Academy Preparatory School at the old
Bainbridge Naval Training Center in Cecil County. He retired from Naval Reserve in 1988 with the rank of commander. He
began a 30-year teaching career in Danville, Va., and moved to Catonsville in 1970 when he joined the faculty of
Milford Mill High School as a chemistry teacher. He subsequently held teaching assignments at Catonsville Middle
School, Loch Raven High School, Ridgely Middle School and Randallstown High School. During his stint with the Baltimore
County public schools, Mr. Ferguson wrote the curriculum for the county's gifted-and-talented program and designed
physical science and chemistry courses, family members said. From 1989 until his retirement in 2004, he was assistant
principal of Westminster High School in Carroll County. Mr. Ferguson was a former active member of Temple Baptist
Church in Woodlawn and Elders Baptist Church in Sykesville. The former Catonsville and Sykesville resident had lived in
Myerstown since 2001. He was a world traveler and enjoyed HO-gauge model railroading. He was a member of Mount Aetna
Baptist Church in Mount Aetna, Pa., where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow. Surviving are his wife
of 40 years, the former Joyce Kinney; two daughters, Wendy Gilbert of Limerick, Pa., and Carla Villatoro of Edgewater,
N.J.; a brother, Kenneth Ferguson of South Mills, N.C.; and a grandson.
Mr Frederick Johnson, who taught history at Milford Mill for many years, passed away Nov 8, 2004
